Waves
37 Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were
breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped.
38 But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they
woke Him and said, “Teacher,don’t
You care that we
are perishing?”
39 Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea.
“Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was
perfectly calm. Mark 4
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
That was some thirty years ago, when I got on with Jesus on the boat to the unknown, and He said; "let us pass over unto the other side".
Thirty years is a long journey to any "other side". Especially when at one point you realize, that you are only half way there. The still waters of the great sea that I am in, becomes still no more. As deeper into the sea, I begin looking around. A storm is brewing. The combination of my wit, wisdom and strength and the size of the boat seems inadequate to handle the storm in the ocean. I am immediately disappointed and disturbed.
Disappointed, that there is still a long way to go. I have been rowing for a while, it is tiresome. At this point of time, I wonder, even if the general direction of the boat has been right. "Is this the right way?" I question. "All the rowing that has been done, and how much of the distance has been covered?" and now "a storm up ahead!"
Disturbed, that the ocean is big and the boat is small. That the waves are getting bigger, stronger and violent; rocking my little boat, vehemently. My oar seems small and my strength even smaller to face the storm in mid ocean.
A sense of some deep exhaustion and foreboding creeps in.
I look around, inside the boat and see the
Master...sleeping! On the cushion!! "Hey, is that fair?" is my
immediate reaction. Deep within I am anguished and upset. "Master, do you
not care that I perish?"
Jesus gets up! When He does that, He puts things back into perspective. It is only the proverbial "storm in a teacup". What is my ocean to Him? What are my waves? A blip in eternity, a ripple in the universe!!! Yet, He cares. He is in the midst of them. He is with me. In command. Even the winds and the waves obey Him.
It takes the song to "make me soar as an
eagle". My daughter singing the Hillsong United oceans song. I listen,
intently, longingly, almost as the last straw in the sinking boat and my
perspective changes...from ground zero of the storm to high above. "So I will call upon Your name, and keep my
eyes above the waves, When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace.
For I am Yours and You are mine."
This morning as I listen to the song again, I am silent. Still.
The wind dies down; a deep calm embraces me.
You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine
Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now
So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise, my soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
