Flow

Image
1  Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,  2  As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!  3  When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.  4  For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.  The Prophet Isaiah 64. 8th Century BC The river flows through the hills. The hills that I call my home. Darjeeling. Darjeeling; that is cold, shutdown, in despair. Forgotten, but by her own children. Over sixty days of shut down; with little food, less hope and much sadness. Democracy worships the god of majority. So do events around the world a...

Waves

Image
37 Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped.  38 But   Jesus   was   in   the   stern,   sleeping   on   the   cushion.   So   they woke   Him   and   said,   “Teacher, don’t You care   that   we are perishing?”   39 Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm. Mark 4 35  And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.  That was some thirty years ago, when I got on with Jesus on the boat to the unknown, and He said; "let us pass over unto the other side". Thirty years is a long journey to any "other side". Especially when at one point you realize, that you are only half way there. The still waters of the great sea that I am in, becomes still no more. As ...

Resilient: Himalayan women

Image
This is a bookmark page...something that adds up to my repository of reflections and thoughts. It is special, because the hills rising up to the Himalayas have always been special. The terrain..rugged, barren, difficult...much like the political, economic and social situation of the place. The situation that musters a vital quality to keep one going...no matter how difficult, how challenging, how impossible. Resilience! It is undoubtedly the hallmark of the women who hail from this place. Here is my own tribute to them. I will not write much; I will let their stories do the talking!

We all begin our life’s journey as a single complete cell. Our mother’s womb provides the perfect place for our formation. Her blood vessels supply us with the oxygen and nutrition that we need. Beginning from the first few weeks of organ formation, it is by nine months we are ready to face the outside world. Once we are born, it is during our first two years the rest of our formation take place; we learn to develop our motor skills, social skills, mental abilities that shape the fine and important attributes like intelligence, emotions and dreams. This period encompassing the time in our mother’s womb till the second birthday is known as the first 1000 days of life. The investments made in our lives during this period has an amazing propensity to determine our destinies. Whether we are destined to grow well mentally and physically, have a good education, good job and contribute well to society. Or whether, we are destined to lag behind! Experts say that investments in...

10000 reasons: agreeing with Matt, Jenny, Ruben and Asmita

"But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love." Rev 2:4 First Love. When my First Love has loved me from Eternity. When my First Love forgives me, no matter what. When my First Love has shown His love by doing the impossible; living for me, dying for me; defeating death for me! When my First Love is my Victor; my Strong Tower; my Strength. When my First Love has not left me alone; by by His Spirit and His Word; abides in me; teaches me, corrects me, guides me, comforts me, encourages me in all good things. When my First Love; encompasses me, behind and before. When my Fist Love holds me in the palm of  His hands; gives me a new name. When my First Love makes His splendour known in the beauty of His creation; the Wonder of His works. These and 10000 reasons my heart finds to understand His great love for me. I couldn't agree more with Matt as he sings this love song and folks closer home; Jennie, Ruben and Asmita join in the chorus. My...

Revisiting Nepal: with Manjushree and Trishna

Image
It's the undeniable umbilical cord! Nepal; a country that stirs up emotions that I did not even know existed! Perhaps it is the heady breeze of the mountains or the rustic smell of the rugged pines and the cones. Perhaps it is the sad history of the land; the simple people or just my roots...deep down! I picked up Manjushree in my recent visit to accompany me. I was looking out for her to take me through the tumultuous events that had shaken, stirred and overhauled the country. It was almost a decade ago that I met her, through her book,"Forget Kathmandu; an Elegy for Democracy", and this time as I walked along the forsaken corridors of NarayanHitti  Palace, I could relive the vivid narratives of  Manjushree's book. I was happy to pick the book again in a bookshop in Pokhara and present it to my daughter. For myself, I bought the more recent "The lives we lost", a collection of essays by Manjushree on events of the last decade or so in Nepal. Vivid, mov...
