Agony and ecstacy
Deuteronomy 32:11 As
an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her
wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:
12 So the LORD alone
did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
To those who have had no agony Jesus says, “I have nothing
for you; stand on your own feet, square your own shoulders. I have come for the
man who knows he has a bigger handful than he can cope with, who knows there
are forces he cannot touch; I will do everything for him if he will let Me.
Only let a man grant he needs it, and I will do it for him.” The Shadow of an
Agony, 1166 R, Oswald Chambers
No more comfortable where I am. No more at ease. A deep
sense of restlessness. An agony.
This morning's picture in my mind is that of an eaglet in
its erstwhile cozy nest. I say "erstwhile cozy" for it is no more so.
The same nest where it was so comfortable before has had its layer of down
removed. Beneath are sticks and thistles. They rub and poke against the tender
skin. This creates an agony, an unease. There is only one way out. To leave the
nest.
And beyond the nest? Is a cliff. A free fall. Agony.
Yet beneath the fall are the spread out wings of the mother
eagle. As the mother eagle rises and stoops, the eaglet is let go time and time
again. Till a time comes, desperate, the eaglet flaps its wings. Uncertain at
first. Scared. Another agony. Soon the wings catch the wind. A little steadier.
A bit of a balance. Stronger. In time it learns to fly.
Now high in the sky….majestically it rides.
Unruffled. Certain. In ecstasy.
