All the world is singing

A few of my friends and I have been working on a music project for sometime. While some of these friends are talented musicians, I have been drawn to music not by any measure of my talent but by seeing the impact that good music and wonderful songs can have on peoples' lives.

While visiting a bookstore recently,  it was natural for me to pick up this appropriately titled book called "All the world is singing".

The book contains 45 exciting stories about indigenous music from different parts of the world and how they have impacted lives. The story about Estonia was pretty heartening as it told about how music had been instrumental in leading the nation to its freedom. Another story from Pakistan about two blind men and their life-songs was touching and it was as interesting to listen to some qawali songs from that region. Did I mention that the book comes with a CD and you can listen to some of the songs, look at pictures of persons mentioned in the stories (all true) and even watch a few relevant videos as you read along? Well, it does.

In all, reading the book was an enriching experience and I would recommend that  you try it too!

Mysteries in the Mist

I am not a regular viewer of Netflix or Amazon prime, but two web series and one film captured my viewing interest. What got me binge watching these, though not in one go, was a combination of familiar location and local actors coupled with compelling stories and engaging drama. The first I watched was "The Last Hour", a mystery story based in Sikkim, with glimpses of  a familiar school: Dr Graham's Homes in Kalimpong. The story revolved around a local shamaan or Jhakri, who uses his uncanny sense of the nether world for solving the mystery. The second, a movie, called "Jaane Jaan" with the recurring theme of murder mystery in the mist, this time featuring a Darjeeling school: Mount Hermon. The mathematics teacher in this movie, uses his dogged persistence in solving maths problems to become part of the murder mystery solution.
